Get more customers with a free giveaway

We all want more customers, a business may struggle with finding more customers, clients or trade. There are many ways of driving customers to you business, we are going to look at a simple but powerful method of customer generation.

Get Customers by Giving something away for Free

Giving something away for free is simple, effective and may be low cost compared to some other methods of generating more sales.

Some of the benefits of giveaways are

  • New customers get to try your product or service
  • Existing customers may feel that you are rewarding them for loyalty
  • Giving something away for free may generate Word of Mouth from your customers to thier networks

Some of the problems of giveaways

Customers may think your product is lower value or cheap

Giving away the wrong product or service may not produce the results you want

Some peopole just want something for free and will not become your customer even after you have given them something for free. the way to minimise this risk is to carefuly think about what you are giving away, to whom and why. Also consider what action you want them to take and how the free product helps this to happen.

A giveaway can be more targeted than other ways of generating business for example advertising, people that take up the free offer may be more likely to pay for the product. For example a customer may take up an offer of a free cup of tea as they had been looking to try tea with thier breakfast purchase at a caffee. The offer of a free taster from a local restaurant may entice the customer to visit for a meal as they were looking for a new restaurant.

It may also be assumed that most potential customers may not take up the free offer if the product or service is not something they are likely to pay for. So the free offer may be used to win customers from other businesses by having them try out your product and service.

Try to give something away that is relevant, something that customers are likely to want and value. For example if you gave away some thing very cheap or of poor quality, you would probably make customers think that all your products are cheap and low quality. This is not  a problem if what you sell is cheap and low price but it’s a big problem if you are selling something that has a higher price point.

The Wonderful World of Apps

Unless you have been living on the moon for the last five years, you will have every idea of what an App is. An App (short for Application) is used as a short-cut to a website and can be found on every smart phone, tablet, mobile device, and some laptops and computers.

Whether you want to chat with friends, do some shopping, sell an item, find a date, watch TV, book travel, catch the latest film, read reviews, pray, meditate, or play games….as the saying goes: “There’s an App for that” (Apple, 2011).

The most common Apps found on every device are the social interaction Apps. FaceBook, Twitter, and Instagram are used by everyone, young and old. There are ways to stay in touch with family around the world: Skype, FaceTime, What’s App, and BBM. With these Apps, many users enjoy instant communication and can even have face to face calls with those far away from home.

There are also sharing Apps like Pinterest, where users “Pin” things on their virtual Notice Boards for others to see and share, whatever interests the user and their followers. Things like Make Up Tips, Cooking Tips and achieving a balanced sate of body and mind, are all available on this App.

There are serious Apps for those looking to job-hunt or those trying to network for business. Linked In and Indeed are regularly used by professionals.

There are also fitness Apps that track progress during walks, runs, training and can connect to gym equipment to provide the day’s workout. My Fitness is a popular one. There are healthy eating Apps that can track the day’s calorie intake and weigh that against physical activity undertaken to determine the user’s daily eating plan progress. Slimming World and Weight Watchers have popular Apps in this category.

And there are Apps for Music and Film buffs: Shazaam will name that tune that has been bugging you for days; while Netflix can provide box sets of TV shows and gives Movies according to the user’s interests, using a rating system to determine which films or shows to upload next time for the user.

Tesco, Asda, Argos, Gumtree and Ebay Apps are available for the seasoned shoppers who enjoy the saved items functions, making shopping quicker and easier. Reserving items at the touch of a button, then picking the item up the next day, all from the comfort of your sofa. Genius.

Each person’s device will have Apps that reflect the user’s mood, personality and interests. No two devices would be the same in theory, as each is unique to the owner. The main App providers are App Store for Apple products and Google Play for other devices like Android.

Viber a great mobile communication tool

The Viber Mobile App

Having used many different tools for communication via my mobile, I’ve found Viber to be one of the best. I started out many years ago with Skype but found it to be rather buggy, this was true over ten years ago before the age of mobile apps. Mainly used it to talk with people in other countries or as a cheap way to call home when I was out of the country but I found Skype to be too buggy with calls dropping or strange sounds on the line etc.

What’s so good about Viber?

After testing a few different tools I eventually I found Viber and it has proven itself to be a pretty reliable tool.

You can make free Viber to Viber calls from your mobile phone using the app and your data plan or Wifi connection. You can also make calls from your Viber to a landline or mobile number, you pay for this but it can be very cost effective for example making calls to some EU countries from UK is very cheap and with some mobile companies like 3 you can call from 11 countries using your existing free calls on your mobile contract however for some strange reason, Czech Republic is not one of those countries. So Viber is a great cost effective way to make calls from a UK mobile to a Czech mobile or landline and it works from Czech Republic to UK.

The tool has many other great useful features including sharing videos and photos from your mobile and the ability to hold a group chat. Another great feature, although not that useful if you have unlimited texts on your contract is that it can automatically send your text messages via Viber to anyone you text that’s also on Viber, it also offers to place a voice call as a Viber to Viber call if the person you are calling is on Viber.

The app looks like it’s targeted at young people with all it’s ‘Stickers’ and other bits but it is a great little small business tool that’s waiting for you to use it.

Over the years this app has worked great on our HTC Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy Note2, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, have also used it a few times on a PC and experienced the usual great results.

signs of growing Consumer spending may benefit your business

Consumers are spending more than they did in 2012.

According to the ONS
Average weekly household expenditure was £517.30 in 2013. This compares with £501.00 in 2012, after adjusting for inflation.

The third highest category of expenditure after housing and Transport was Recreation and culture, here consumers spent £63.90 per week.

This category includes spending on TVs, computers, newspapers, books, leisure activities and package holidays. (ONS, 2014)

These indicators are a sign of opportunity but what are you doing to make sure that your business gets a share of this increase in spending?

Win more customers with a great USP

One of the best ways to gain customers and grow your business is using your USP.

This gives customers a reason to do business with you and not some other business offering the same product or service. It’s important for consumers to have a reason for doing business with you, there are probably lots of other businesses offering what you offer, show your prospective customers why you are a better option than your competition.
